PROGRAM OUTCOMES:
Overall learning outcomes
In this program, all participants explored the concept of indigenous games, delving into traditional design and underlying philosophies. They learned about the functionality of games like Kōnane and Ulu Maika and the fabrication technologies involved. As a hands-on activity, participants engaged in crafting their own Kōnane boards, from sanding to finishing, experiencing the process firsthand and gaining a deeper appreciation for the cultural significance and artistry behind these games.
Lab and Studio Cohort Concept
Participants were placed into one of two cohorts: Lab or Studio. The Lab cohort was tailored for 5th-7th graders, with a focus on physical computing, including circuitry and switches. Meanwhile, the Studio cohort catered to 8th grade and up, had a stronger emphasis on AI and XR technologies and offered advanced exploration opportunities in these areas.
Lab Learning Outcomes
During the program, participants in the Lab cohort achieved several learning outcomes. They mastered the concepts of circuitry, switches, pressure-sensitive mechanisms, and weighted systems, both in 2 and 4-directional setups. Additionally, they delved into AI applications, exploring affect and gesture recognition, and utilized GenAI for game asset creation. The Lab participants also honed their programming skills, delving into block-based coding, while exploring the fusion of moʻolelo with game development.
As a final project, each participant utilized the framework of Kōnane to tell an original interactive story of abundance by programming and designing thematic game boards and pieces in Scratch.
Studio Learning Outcomes
The Studio cohort accomplished a wide range of learning outcomes. They delved into the world of GenAI, exploring its applications through image and text-based prompting, while also gaining an introduction to parameters. In the realm of game development, participants ventured into 3D design to create an XR (Extended Reality) version of Kōnane, making it playable on various platforms such as mobile, desktop, and in VR environments. The cohort also continued working with Unity back-end development, 3D modeling of assets, and front-end experiences utilizing Spatial.io, enhancing their expertise in cutting-edge technologies for immersive experiences.
