Mele Murals Fall Intersession Program
Estria Foundation
Our Fall 2024 theme is “Aliʻi” which means chief/chiefess or ruler. Our focus on our aliʻi will be lessons focused on what it means to be a pono (righteous) leader. As an up and coming generation, we felt led to this theme to dive deeper into the lives of our royal rulers and a better understanding of how they lead our people. Once they understand what it means to be an aliʻi we will then highlight the ʻōlelo noʻeau above to help them understand our role as servants to the land and our responsibilities to care and nurture our true chiefess; Papahānaumokuakea (Earth Mother).
This program is designed to engage keiki in a culture-focused arts curriculum perpetuating Hawaiian culture. Students will strengthen their sense of belonging by connecting to Hawai‘i. We will explore her rich culture and uncover the beauty of this place we call home by learning mele (poetry) written mostly in ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i (native tongue), rooted in wahi pana (legendary place). We will hear from special guest speakers, make crafts, and practice mindfulness.
Registration is now open! We are accepting applications for our Mele Murals Spring Program. This Art and Hawaiian Culture program is available for in-person learning for students grades 3rd – 5th. All art supplies, huaka’i (field trips), Mele Murals program tshirt, and daily snacks will be provided. Students must bring daily home lunch and drinking water in a reusable water bottle.

Hāpai Pū
Kākoʻo ʻŌiwi
Hāpai Pū is an 11-month apprentice-style training and development program designed to immerse and connect individuals to ʻāina and ahupuaʻa management techniques unique to Koʻolaupoko.
Apprentices learn by doing, rotating across three work sites (on KS and non-KS lands), guided by mentors at each of the sites, gaining new skills, experience and appreciation for how the sites all connect as part of an interconnected ahupuaʻa system.
The goal is to train and matriculate new ʻāina stewards to increase the kalo farming workforce, support value-added food and poi production, contribute to ʻāina-kai-loko iʻa restoration and conservation through ecosystem management (both traditional and tech-assisted) while workforce earns and learns the business.
From an impact lens, the Hāpai Pū program is rebuilding new connections for the people and place, enabling time for deeper understanding, practice of skills and confidence contributing to each place.
Most importantly, as the program instills a sense of value and purpose through quality work, the physical landscape of the sites are transforming in positive ways that advance the operations, production and business capacity of these ‘āina organizations.

Miloliʻi Lawaiʻa ʻOhana Camps
Kalanihale
Kalanihale hosts its annual Lawaiʻa ʻOhana Camp every summer. This ʻāina- based program is tailored for entire family participation. Being in and around our ocean during camp, we teach cultural and safety protocol, lawaiʻa pono, fish anatomy, coastal & marine monitoring, kilo skills, and hawaiian traditional practices. We are grateful to have many collaborators skilled from different disciplines that make our camps unique every year.
These camps allow Kalanihale to focus on developing next generation stewards of our ocean waters. We enjoy seeing our Lawaiʻa Campers return every summer. Some have become our in-residence kilo & kiaʻi, participate in Miloliʻi coastal and intertidal monitoring.
Kalanihale serves as co-manager with the State DLNR to manage Miloliʻiʻs coast and marine resources, Miloliʻiʻs Lawaiʻa ʻOhana Camp has served as an outreach to lawaiʻa families who participate in our camp. Curriculum includes learning lawaiʻa pono, discussions on observations and concerns for our ocean, and rules - current and those being proposed. We are confident that teaching to families allows keiki to be reinforced to practice these sustainable ways in other waters and at home, supported by their mākua. These are our next generation stewards.
