Testimonials:

It has impacted me by broadening my perspective of what quality teaching and learning can look like. It has also impacted me personally by realizing the privilege I have of being a future ancestor to my son and the next generation of leaders. Through Future Ancestors, I learned how to partner our haumana with community organizations in order to deepen our connection to place and responsibility to be community leaders. It has been such a blast being able to learn alongside our kids from all of the wahi pana that weʻve been able to visit, and all of the guest kumu that weʻve been able to hear from. I have also been inspired to see how empowered students are when they understand they are the dreams of their ancestors.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES:

We are excited to report that our Future Ancestors Spring Sessions provided an amazing learning experience for 65 students from four different Moku! This is so significant because for the first time we were able to expand our program to four different communities on two different islands.

Here is a breakdown of the quantitative outcomes:

  • 65 Total Haumāna Engaged in Future Ancestors

  • 77% of these students were Native Hawaiian

  • 17 Wahi Pana/Community Learning Spaces visited and engaged with

  • 3 out of the 4 schools partnered with were Native Hawaiian Focused Charter Schools

  • 1 of the schools was on Lānaʻi which is our first time running our program outside of Oʻahu

  • 10 DOE Kumu lead our Future Ancestor Moku Hui growing their understanding of community and how to implement Hawaiian Culture Based Education

  • All Kumu have reported their intention to return to lead our Summer Future Ancestor Programs

  • 1 paid Social Media Intern who is a senior from Hālau Kū Māna and participated in our Digital Creators Class

  • We created 9 individual Instagram Reels about our experiences at Future Ancestors that have reached over 11,351 users over the past month alone!

Overall, we believe that this version of Future Ancestors was a success because we were able to keep all of the students that started with the program engaged through the three days of community exploration and they expressed both excitement to continue to participant in this type of learning and appreciation for being able to be part of this experience with their friends. It is hard to quantify smiles and laughter and joy but it was present in each hui throughout the program.

We also were able to introduce the students to some exciting tech tools that allow them to utilize technology in service to ʻĀina and the community. From learning to fly drones, to using Ipads to capture 3d renderings of their Wahi Pana, to documenting their experience and stories through digital storytelling tools. For many it was the first time making that connection between our Culture and Technology. We are so excited to prepare for our Summer Version of Future Ancestors which will give students more time to explore their community and to use the new technology that we introduced. Each hui will also be hosting the other groups for a day in their Moku which we believe will be an empowering experience for everyone involved.

Mahalo for your continued support and belief in growing Future Ancestors!
