PROGRAM OUTCOMES:
During this Kau Wela Leʻaleʻa 2023 program, HMKF served 36 youth participants, of which 33 identified as Native Hawaiian. During the 4 week program, participants experienced 10 huakaʻi in addition to the on-site activities. At this time, we are continuing to analyze data. Preliminary qualitative data for program activities are as follows -
131 program hours targeting positive personal development, including pro-social behaviors and knowledge of Native Hawaiian cultural values, language and practices.
12 hours targeting academic support, including increasing the knowledge of ʻāina-based careers, college and career readiness, and support in completion of homework and other school assignments.
51 hours targeting health and wellness, including ocean safety and swimming skills, and nutrition and healthy habits.
110 hours of cultural connectedness, including ocean recreation, and knowledge and practice of Hawaiian language, traditions and values.
