About the event
The Hula Preservation Society is hosting a day of workshops dedicated to the life and hula legacy of the remarkable Kumu Leilani Alama (1925-2014). At the time of her passing, she held the record for the longest career as a Kumu Hula, spanning an impressive 71 years.
Kumu Leilani was renowned for her dynamic implement routines, and during this event, attendees will have the opportunity to learn two of her classic repertoire pieces—one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
We are honored to have her own family members leading the workshops:
- Hānai niece kupuna TeMoana Makolo
- Grand-niece Kumu Hula Puanani Alama Jung
- Niece and workshop alakaʻi Tanna Alama Hee
This event will focus on her implement repertoire, which was developed during the vibrant era of hapa-haole hula. This period, often viewed as "less Hawaiian," saw Hawaiians playing a crucial role in evolving the dances, creating hula that was both grounded in tradition and reflective of the contemporary Hawaiʻi of that time, especially in the lively atmosphere of Waikīkī.
The routines taught in this workshop encapsulate the energy and vigor of that dynamic environment, making this a unique opportunity to honor Kumu Leilani Alama's enduring legacy.
