About the event
In 2006, a Māori exchange student from Rotorua came to bring her language and culture to Molokaʻi by enrolling as a Hawaiian immersion student. This exchange sparked 20 years of ongoing collaboration in language, arts, music, and culture.
During this upcoming trip, we aim to build capacity to engage an even broader audience of hands-on learners in six unique areas. By pairing a Hawaiian practitioner with a Māori practitioner, participants will learn skills, moʻolelo, and protocol from both cultures, allowing them to see the similarities and distinctions.
The six pairings include:
- Textiles and clothing
- Adornments - fresh and feather
- Healing
- Ceremony and protocol
- Games
- Music/performing arts
The event will feature pre-signing for one of the tracks, followed by open forum presentations to set objectives. Attendees will then split off into individual workshops hosted by Hawaiian and Māori practitioners for several hours of hands-on instruction. Participants will share music and food at lunchtime, culminating in a gallery-style hoʻike, with each of the six hui demonstrating what they have learned to everyone else.
