About the event

The event Mauna Kea Education and Awareness is collaborating with Hālau Hula Keʻalaonamaupu and Hale Haumea to teach and perform ʻO Hoʻomoe hoʻi imua, a chant consisting of 78 lines, specifically chant number 174 from He Lei no Emalani, which honors Queen Emma.

This chant is significant as only one paukū has been previously heard or taught, known as Malana mai Kaʻū. Initially selected as an all-school chant for Waimea Middle School, it was later shared with the Waimea community schools. The chant became a cornerstone for Nā Kālaiwaʻa - Makaliʻi ʻOhana and the wider ʻohana waʻa, eventually evolving into a unifying rallying call for the Mauna Kea Protectors, emphasizing its powerful message: “He pala Mauna a Wākea i luna,” meaning Mauna Kea there above.

For the first time, this chant will be taught in its entirety through a series of four community workshops, alongside two additional workshops specifically for coordinators, school teachers, and kumu hula.
