About the event

The Native Hawaiian Education Association (NHEA) Convention is an annual gathering of educators, practitioners, students, and community leaders dedicated to enhancing education for Native Hawaiian learners. Established in 1998, this private non-profit organization supports collaboration, professional growth, and collective action within Hawaiian education.

The convention provides a platform for sharing research, effective practices, cultural knowledge, and innovative teaching approaches rooted in Native Hawaiian perspectives. Participants can expect a variety of activities, including:

  • Workshops
  • Panel discussions
  • Community engagement

These initiatives aim to uplift educators' work while reinforcing education as a vital pathway for the well-being and advancement of the lāhui.

The purpose of the NHEA Convention is to convene educators and community partners to exchange knowledge, strengthen professional networks, and advance practices that support the success and well-being of Native Hawaiian learners. Attendees will have the opportunity to address current educational challenges, highlight promising practices, and collectively shape the future of Hawaiian education.

Holding the convention annually fosters continuity among Hawaiian educators, offering a space for reflection, renewal, and alignment. Each year, participants come together to share lessons learned, respond to emerging needs, and reaffirm commitments to culturally grounded education. This annual convening strengthens relationships across islands and institutions while sustaining momentum in advocacy and innovation, ensuring that the voices, ʻike, and experiences of Native Hawaiian educators continue to inform educational systems serving our communities.
