About the event
The Muliwai Tilapia Roundup is a one-day, intergenerational community event dedicated to restoring the ecological health of the Nānākuli Muliwai through the active removal of invasive tilapia. Rooted in mālama ʻāina and collective kuleana, this event brings keiki, ʻohana, kupuna, and members of the Kaiāulu—particularly Native Hawaiian families connected to this place—together to strengthen understanding of the cultural and environmental significance of the muliwai and its connection to the nearshore ecosystem.
Participants will engage in a focused educational session on invasive species impacts and responsible resource management, followed by hands-on fish removal using traditional and sustainable fishing methods. By uniting cultural knowledge, environmental literacy, and direct restoration, the Roundup reinforces stewardship as an applied responsibility within the Kaiāulu.
