About the event
The Molokai Holokai Hoʻolauleʻa is a robust, multi-day immersion into health, wellness, and stewardship, featuring a total operating budget exceeding $145,000 for this action-packed event. This event is designed to strengthen the character and identity of our youth while allowing adults to celebrate and inspire them through high levels of racing.
Event Highlights:
- Day 1 (Mālama ʻĀina):
Participants engage in environmental protection through a community cleanup with Sustainable Molokai, teaching the kuleana (responsibility) of giving back to the ʻāina before entering the kai.
- Day 1 (Ocean & Land Racing):
A platform for youth to build confidence, with past participants including 15 youth in the 26-mile Maui to Molokai crossing.
- Safety Infrastructure:
GPS trackers for all ocean athletes and additional boat support for the 10-mile race.
- Day 2 (Elite Progression):
Introduction of a new 10-mile elite run to challenge runners beyond their limits.
- Day 2 (Culture & Wellness):
Features multiple races including the 10-mile paddle race, 1-mile Keiki and Makua Paddle race, and a Hoʻolauleʻa with hands-on cultural workshops and a trash art competition.
All community workshops, the Day 1 beach cleanup, and the Day 2 Hoʻolauleʻa are free and open to the general public. Registration for all Molokai youth and their accompanying ʻohana is 100% free for every racing event: the 26-mile, 10-mile paddle, 1-mile Keiki/Makua ocean race, 10-mile elite run, 5K, and 1K.
