About the event

This three-part workshop series explores the cultural pilina that connects the abundant resources found from mauka to makai. Participants will engage in hands-on learning guided by master practitioners in quilting, lei making, and fish preparation. Each session highlights traditional skills, ʻike kupuna (ancestral knowledge), and the deep relationships between land, ocean, and community.

Cultural relevance and moʻolelo will be thoughtfully shared and encouraged throughout the series, creating meaningful space for intergenerational learning and connection. Participants may register for one, two, or all three workshops.

  • Workshop 1: Hawaiian QuiltingDiscover the rich history of quilting in Hawaiʻi and the significance of traditional patterns and motifs. Guided by a third-generation master quilter, participants will learn how to select a pattern, prepare fabric for stitching, and practice foundational quilting techniques. All supplies will be provided, and each participant will complete a quilt block that can later be transformed into a pillow cover.
  • Workshop 2: Lei Poʻo MakingUsing both provided materials and carefully gathered flora and fauna, participants will create their own lei poʻo (head lei). This hands-on session will teach the steps to begin, construct, and finish a lei while encouraging personal creativity and expression. Cultural context and the significance of lei in Hawaiʻi will be woven throughout the experience.
  • Workshop 3: Preparing Iʻa & Food SustainabilityIn this interactive session, participants will learn how to clean, cut, and prepare iʻa (fish) using traditional and contemporary techniques. Families (‘ohana) will also explore food sustainability and its relevance today. Together, we will reflect on important questions: Where do we begin? What actions can we take? How do these practices strengthen our communities?
