Mālama Waʻa

Mālama Waʻa & ʻĀina Day is an all-ages, hands-on stewardship event centered on caring for canoes, equipment, and the shoreline. Participants will learn the responsibilities that come with paddling, including mālama waʻa and mālama ʻāina. Held on the ʻāina historically known as Malama, once home to Kamehameha V, Lot Kapuāiwa, this event deepens participants’ connection to place and the legacy it holds.

Through collective work, the event strengthens cultural values, kuleana, and respect for shared resources within our canoe club and the broader Molokaʻi community.

Event Schedule:

1. 8:00 – 8:30 AM Arrival & Work AssignmentsCheck-in, waivers, and assignment of mālama waʻa and mālama ʻāina tasks.
2. 8:30 – 9:00 AM Pule & Talk StoryOpening pule and discussion on kuleana, respect for waʻa, and caring for place.
3. 9:00 – 10:30 AM Mālama Waʻa StationsHands-on canoe care including washing, rigging, lashing, minor maintenance, paddle care, and storage practices.
4. 10:30 – 11:00 AM Snack & Rest Break
5. 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM Mālama ʻĀina ActivityBeach clean-up, shoreline care, and discussion on how paddlers mālama the ocean environment.
6. 12:30 – 1:30 PM Knowledge Sharing & DemonstrationsCanoe history, cultural protocols, and intergenerational sharing about waʻa values and responsibilities.
7. 1:30 – 2:00 PM Closing Reflection & Clean-UpGroup reflection, mahalo, and final clean-up.
