About the event
The Hakipuʻu Community Makahiki Celebration 2026 is a free, public event held in Koʻolaupoko, bringing together keiki, ʻōpio, mākua, and kūpuna for a day filled with intergenerational cultural learning and connection to the ʻāina.
Hosted by Hakipuʻu Academy, the event will feature:
- Hands-on traditional Hawaiian makahiki competitions
- Cultural practitioners sharing moʻolelo and protocol
- Live Hawaiian music
- A community fishing tournament
Approximately 200 participants will engage in active learning experiences that strengthen their pilina to the ʻāina, each other, and valued cultural practices. The celebration will conclude with the recognition of makahiki game winners across age divisions, with prizes supporting Native Hawaiian-owned businesses in Koʻolaupoko.
This event aims to foster community connection, ʻike Hawaiʻi, and joyful engagement in culturally grounded practices.
