Mauliola (Sand Island)

About the event

Kōkua Hawai'i Foundation (KHF) regularly hosts quarterly beach cleanups as part of its environmental initiatives through KHF's Plastic Free Hawaiʻi Program. These cleanups are typically organized in collaboration with other community organizations, such as Sustainable Coastlines Hawai'i and UH Mānoa's College of Education, bringing together a large group of volunteers. On Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on January 19, 2026, over 300 volunteers participated in cleaning the Kahuku coastline, reflecting KHF’s dedication to environmental stewardship.

This event will be held on June 6, 2026, to bring recognition and history back to Mauliola (Sand Island). It will include a large-scale coastline cleanup, as well as efforts to bring able-bodied volunteers out to the coastal island of Mokuʻeōwa (Mokauea) to retrieve accumulated debris from runoff, the Pacific Ocean, and nearby harbors.

In addition to the cleanup, we will invite community partners to host educational booths, activities, and games, and collaborate with nearby food vendors to offer discounted lunches for participants in appreciation of their hana and commitment to mālama ʻāina.

KHF will be co-hosting this event with:

  • Mauliola Ke'ehi [Native Hawaiian owned]: Promoting transformative healing through understanding the frequencies, vibrations, and Mana (energy) of the Honua (earth).
  • Global Preservation Initiative: Protecting shared human and environmental health by combating plastic pollution.
  • State of Hawaiʻi Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR): Working with the people of Hawai‘i to manage, conserve, and restore the state’s unique aquatic resources.
  • State of Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR): Promoting the safe and responsible use of Hawaii’s natural resources.

This sponsorship will directly contribute to the success of the cleanup and the well-being of our community and environment.
