Living Knowledge: ʻUlu in Practice

The Hawaiʻi ʻUlu Cooperative will host a full day of multifaceted educational agroforestry excursions designed to strengthen community connection to ʻāina and Hawaiian staple crops through immersive, place-based learning experiences.

On this day-long trip, participants will visit premier examples of traditional Hawaiian breadfruit agroforestry restoration. Potential sites include:

• Kahaluʻu Kūāhewa
• Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden
• Māla Kaluʻulu Farm
• Kahakalau Loʻi

Participants will engage in hands-on learning about:

• ʻUlu propagation (including air-layering and variety selection)
• Cultivation practices
• Agroforestry system design
• Harvest timing
• Cultural significance of canoe crops within traditional Hawaiian food systems

This excursion will include:

• Cultural grounding and ʻike from local growers and kūpuna practitioners
• Demonstrations and interactive participation in cultivation/harvesting techniques
• Education on mālama ʻāina practices within agroforestry systems
• A locally-sourced lunch prepared by local chefs trained in innovative canoe crop cuisine
• Facilitated discussion on rebuilding resilient, place-based food systems

These experiences are designed to foster deeper relationships between community members, ʻāina, farmers, researchers, and local food practitioners while strengthening the shared understanding of food sovereignty and mālama ʻāina.

All events will be open to the public, with a $75 per person sliding registration fee. Pending funding support, discounted/sponsored tickets will be available for local farmers, students, and kūpuna.
