About the event

The 5th Annual Laulima Symposium is a free event designed to bring together students, professionals, and community leaders to collaborate, share ideas, and develop innovative, culturally-grounded strategies to meet community needs across Hawaiʻi. This year, the theme is “Mālama honua, mālama kaiāulu, mālama kānaka: Caring for earth, community, people in the 21st century”.

The event will feature:

  • Inspiring speakers and presentations
  • A pitch competition with top students (grades 6 through college)
  • Networking opportunities
  • Workshops related to Indigenous STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medicine)

We are recruiting Native Hawaiian and local scientists, engineers, and professors from public and private industries and institutions to share their professional journeys and exciting work. The top students from the Honua Scholars Proposal Competition will present their projects to a panel of judges from the community.

Workshops will explore hands-on, collaborative learning activities that encourage participants to delve into how ʻike Hawaiʻi and our connection to the ʻāina and community can be foundational in designing STEMM solutions for Hawaiʻi. One workshop may focus on the values and practices in the Kūlana Noiʻi framework as a guide for community engaged research projects.

This event fosters Indigenous interdisciplinary collaboration, professional mentorship, and STEMM engagement, welcoming participants from all identities and backgrounds, including those without formal training in STEMM fields.

Hosted by Honua Scholars (Fiscally Sponsored by Pacific American Foundation)
