About the event
Lauhoe is a free, public cultural gathering that invites our kaiāulu back to the shoreline — back to the place where stories, strength, and identity are carried by the ocean. Under a large tent on the beach, kupuna, loea, and practitioners welcome keiki, ʻohana, and community members into a day of hands-on learning rooted in waʻa culture.
Participants paddle in double-hulled canoes for a safe, stable introduction to the kai, while intermediate paddlers practice technique in single-hulled canoes along the course. A dedicated canoe safety and rescue station teaches essential ocean skills such as huli recovery, bridle rigging, and safe re-entry — knowledge that has protected our people for generations.
Lauhoe is more than an event; it is a chance for our community to reconnect with each other, with ʻāina, and with the traditions that have shaped our identity. Through shared experiences on the water, participants rediscover the sense of belonging, pride, and kuleana that strengthens a kaiāulu.
