About the event
The Lahainaluna Firebreak Initiative is a community-led wildfire mitigation effort spearheaded by Maui United Way in partnership with local organizations, alumni, emergency responders, and volunteers. The initiative was launched to protect Lahainaluna High School, one of the oldest schools west of the Rockies, along with nearby Princess Nāhiʻenaʻena Elementary, Lahaina Intermediate, and homes along Lahainaluna Road. The goal is to create a cleared firebreak and emergency access route above the campus.
During its first workday, volunteers successfully cleared nine acres of dry brush, establishing a critical buffer against future wildfires and improving firefighter access. This initiative not only aims to enhance safety but also builds resilience and peace of mind for West Maui families and students.
The initiative embodies grassroots collaboration and long-term disaster preparedness rooted in local kuleana. Key partners include MEMA, HWMO, HECO, Malama Maui Nui, and Service Rentals, along with various other local organizations.
