About the event

This free event at the Hanalei Center is dedicated to celebrating the traditions of lei making and the culture of May Day in Hawaiʻi, along with the Haleleʻa practice of hoʻoulumāhiehie, which involves decorating and adorning communities with plants.

Throughout the day, attendees can expect:

  • Lei-making demonstrations by renowned lei makers

  • Talks and presentations focused on conservation efforts

  • Demonstrations of hoʻoulumāhiehie practices

  • A lei-making competition

  • Music, hula, and oli performances

  • A May Day court and procession via hololio

Conservation of lei plants will be a significant focus, with the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) conducting plant giveaways featuring various island plants such as ʻŌhia for Hawaiʻi and ʻIlima for Oʻahu. The event aims to raise awareness and excitement around these cultural traditions and incorporates the contributions of the local queer and mahu community.
