About the event

Monthly service project days at Kaniakapūpū in Luakaha, Nuʻuanu happen regularly on the first Sunday of every month from 9AM-12PM led by the kahu of Aha Hui Mālama O Kaniakapūpū, Doctor Baron Ching.

This lā hana is open to keiki aged 13+ and adults of all ages who are interested in learning more about the multi-layered history of this wahi as it is woven into the historical tapestry of aloha ʻāina and ea in Hawaiʻi. Attendees will be granted access within this restricted watershed to assist with stewardship of Kamehameha III’s Summer palace.

The group meets at the Board of Water Supply pumping station field near 4282 Nuuanu Pali Dr in the morning for a briefing and protocol before heading up to the site. Please note that the trail can get muddy and that there are no restrooms on the restricted property.

We recommend that attendees dress comfortably in outdoor service-work attire, bring bug repellant, water, and carpool if possible. Gardening tools including clippers, gloves, laupers, etc. will be provided by the hosts.

Together with the Aha Hui Mālama o Kaniakapūpū, attendees will be expected to work and provide general upkeep (weeding, clearing of invasive vegetation, gardening, etc.) during their visit to the site. Most importantly, these service days are valuable spaces to dive deeper into moʻolelo Hawaiʻi and build pilina with ‘āina, kaiaulu, and our ocean of ‘ike kūpuna.
