About the event

Kauluakalana is honored to present the Kūʻokoʻa Kūkanono event, a pivotal community gathering designed to commemorate Lā Kūʻokoʻa (Hawaiian Independence Day). This event supports our mission to forge resilient and nourishing relationships between kānaka (people) and ʻāina (land), aligning with our foundational objectives of cultural revitalization, community regeneration, identity reclamation, and the renewal of kuleana (responsibility) within the historically rich ahupuaʻa of Kailua.

The challenges of recent years have eroded the vital connections between our community members and their natural environment. Kūʻokoʻa Kūkanono aims to mend these connections, drawing upon cultural practices and the power of shared stories and traditions to rekindle a sense of unity and purpose.

Activities include:

  • Poi pounding
  • Storytelling
  • Hula performances

These activities offer a comprehensive experience that nourishes the body, mind, and spirit, while reinforcing the bonds among our community, heritage, and the ʻāina.

Our past Kūʻokoʻa Kūkanono events have demonstrated significant community interest and engagement, with attendance growing from 300-400 participants in our inaugural year to an anticipated 600-800 participants the following year, and over 1200 each year over the last 2 years.
