Kohala Kamehameha Day Celebration | North Kohala Community Resource Center

The Kamehameha Day Celebration is a statewide cultural event that preserves the unique history of our Hawaiian Islands. In North Kohala, nestled on the northern tip of Hawaiʻi Island, King Kamehameha's legacy remains intertwined with this small town’s history as many place names tell the story of his historic journey to Pololū Valley following his birth. North Kohala holds special historical significance as it is where a community came together to protect a prophesied ruler from those who tried to eliminate him. This spirit of unity and community continues to be reflected in the annual celebration of this revered King at the original Kamehameha Statue in Kapaʻau, which was gifted to the town after being lost at sea.

Held every year on June 11th in Kapaʻau, King Kamehameha I’s birthplace, the event begins with a sunrise protocol and lei draping at the original statue, performed by Native Hawaiian practitioners. A two-mile floral parade follows, featuring pāʻū princesses on horseback, floats, and marching units. The day concludes with a hoʻolauʻleʻa at Kamehameha Park, offering live entertainment, food, and hands-on educational exhibits on voyaging, laʻau lapaʻau (healing), and weaving. The event attracts many visitors each year, immersing them in authentic traditions. It strengthens the social fabric by connecting keiki and kūpuna, fostering lāhui (unity), and supporting the local economy by providing a marketplace for artisans.
