Celebrate the 190th lā hānau of King Kalākaua with canoe paddling and cultural activities at Keʻehi.

Time & Location

Nov 14, 2026, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM HST

Keʻehi, Ke'ehi Lagoon Memorial, 2685 N Nimitz Hwy, Honolulu, HI 96819, USA

About the event

Join us as we honor the 190th lā hānau of King Kalākaua by reviving the moʻolelo of his summer home on the tidal island of Mokuoeo, located within the wahi pana of Keʻehi/Kapālama Kai. This event aims to uplift the legacy of hoe waʻa that King Kalākaua helped restore.

In tribute to Kalākaua’s proclamation on November 16, 1875, which called for the return of canoe racing—a practice suppressed for nearly 50 years—we will reconnect keiki and ‘ohana to one of Hawaiʻi’s oldest cultural traditions and the sacred stories of Keʻehi.

This community celebration will reach out to families who currently do not have access to hoe waʻa. Throughout the day, participants will strengthen their connection to ʻIke Kupuna, Hawaiian culture, honua, and self through hands-on learning in the healing waters of Keʻehi.

Planned activities include:

  • Moʻolelo of the wahi pana of Keʻehi
  • Introductory canoe paddling lessons
  • Hoe waʻa moʻolelo art
  • Limu education and tasting
  • Guided ʻike-based wellness practices, including Kilo Kino (close observation of feelings and body) and Kilo Hanu (breath awareness)
