About the event

The Kanaka Culinary Explosion is a free, bi-lingual community event sponsored by EA Ecoversity, aimed at strengthening Hawaiian families’ connection to food, culture, and language through hands-on learning experiences.

Held annually at Nani Mau Gardens, this event brings together community members of all ages to learn how to prepare healthy, affordable Hawaiian dishes using locally sourced staple foods such as kalo, ʻuala, ʻulu, and iʻa.

Participants will enjoy:

  • Interactive culinary demonstrations led by professional Hawaiian chefs.
  • Hands-on preparation stations to gain practical skills in traditional and contemporary Hawaiian cooking.
  • A wide variety of food tastings prepared by local vendors, chefs, and young Hawaiians participating in the Kanaka Culinary Arts program.

In addition to culinary learning, the event features cultural and agricultural education, with Hawaiian practitioners and experts sharing knowledge on:

  • Cultivating, propagating, and preserving Hawaiian food plants.
  • The importance of food sovereignty and sustainability.

Attendees can also engage in learning experiences centered around Lā Kūʻokoʻa through storytelling, visual installations, and hands-on cultural activities.

Designed as a joyful, family-centered gathering, the Kanaka Culinary Explosion creates space for learning, celebration, and reconnection—honoring traditional Hawaiian foodways while nurturing healthy families, resilient communities, and a thriving future for the lāhui.
