Hoʻoulu Heluhelu: A Summer of Reading | Teach For America Hawaiʻi

Hoʻoulu Heluhelu: A Summer of Reading is a three-hour public summer literacy gathering designed for K–3 haumāna and their ʻohana from the Nānākuli–Waiʻanae complex area.

This interactive event will center on moʻolelo and culturally grounded children’s literature rooted in local ʻaina, Hawaiian history, and significant leaders of Hawaiʻi. Hosted at the Nānākuli Public Library, the event features dynamic read-aloud sessions led by Teach For America - Hawai’i corps members, alumni, and community contributors.

Participants can expect:

• Read-aloud sessions that begin with cultural and historical context.

• Guided reading circles for haumāna.

• Hands-on workshops for caregivers focused on building literacy habits at home.

While families gather to strengthen pilina and deepen their knowledge of place, each keiki will leave with books and literacy tools to continue their learning rooted in ʻike Hawaiʻi over the summer months. Light refreshments will be provided to close the event.

The invitation also extends to alumni, family members, and Board from our network, intending to strengthen connections and enhance educational possibilities rooted in Hawaiʻi.

While RSVP is required, details will be shared broadly via education partners to ensure community engagement.
