About the event

In celebration of Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea on July 27, 2025, Puʻuhonua Society will participate in the Annual Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea Celebration at Thomas Square in Kulaokahu'a (Makiki, Honolulu). Through our Hōʻeu Mana program, we will activate the makai side of the park, bringing together cultural practitioners and artists to honor Hawaiian sovereignty through various art forms and cultural practices. The event will feature visual art, music, poetry, photography, performances, and movement, while cultural practitioners will share moʻolelo and lead interactive activities that connect participants to this significant wahi pana. These diverse expressions reconnect participants with the historical and ancestral memory of Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea - the day commemorating the restoration of Hawaiian sovereignty in 1843. As a prelude to the main celebration, we will host an evening film screening on July 26th featuring Native Hawaiian produced films, including historical footage of early Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea celebrations at Thomas Square. Through art and cultural expression, we aim to create a space for community reflection, dialogue, and collective healing while documenting and sharing these important moʻolelo of resilience and empowerment.
