Hoeae Kaiāulu

Join us for a morning of hōʻeleu, a catalyst for kaiāulu (community) rooted in aloha ʻāina at MAʻO’s Palikea Farm in Waiʻanae.

Participants will work with MAʻO’s youth leaders and farm team to plant maiʻa (banana) as part of our expanding organic agroforestry system. This hands-on experience strengthens local food security, restores soil health, and builds long-term agricultural resilience in our community.

More than a volunteer workday, this gathering creates space for intergenerational learning and hoʻopono, restoring right relationship with ʻāina and with one another. Beloved kūpuna from our community will share moʻolelo (stories) of place, agriculture, and cultural practice. These stories ground the day’s work in ancestral ike and lived experience, provide cultural context, deepen participants’ connection to the land, and strengthen the transmission of knowledge across generations.

Through hana and talk story with our mahiʻai (farmers) and kūpuna, attendees will:

• Deepen pilina (meaningful relationships)
• Carry shared kuleana (responsibility) with intention and joy.
• Learn how organic agroforestry integrates ancestral wisdom with regenerative practices.
• Gain insight into MAʻO’s youth leadership pathways and community-based food systems.

This event is open to community members of all ages. Farm work is best suited for participants ages 13 and up, with age-appropriate learning opportunities available for younger keiki.

Together, we reconnect to our first kumu, the land, and reaffirm that when ʻāina thrives, our community thrives.
