About the event
Ho‘ā Wailoa: A Tribute to Pi‘opi‘o is a free, community-centered activation at Wailoa Art Center, presented alongside the annual Young-at-Art exhibition. This initiative is designed to “light up” Wailoa as a living cultural space and highlights the history and cultural significance of Piʻopiʻo, the Wailoa River wetland area.
The event invites keiki, ‘ohana, and community members to engage through storytelling, art-making, and shared experiences. Rather than simply observing, Ho‘ā Wailoa encourages participants to listen, create, and reflect together.
The initiative includes:
A ‘Talk-Story’ evening featuring local knowledge holders
An ‘ohana block printing and multi-media art workshop inspired by the stories of Pi‘opi‘o
A Keiki Art Contest that promotes continued reflection and engagement beyond a single day
By aligning these experiences with the annual Young-at-Art exhibition, the project deepens youth-centered learning, strengthens connections to ‘āina, inspires intergenerational learning, elevates local artists and cultural practitioners, and expands free, accessible arts opportunities for Hawai‘i Island families.
