About the event
Hānai i Wailoa is a one-day education workshop presented by the Native Nations Education Foundationʻs Paneʻe Mua Project (PMP) in partnership with Blueprint for Changeʻs Puʻuhonua Wellness 2 Program (PW2). This workshop is geared toward Native Hawaiian families and individuals.
In the first half of the workshop, participants will learn about Hiloʻs Wailoa river and the surrounding area, including moʻolelo about the area and its significance as a river system that fed into large loʻi. Weather permitting, participants will take a walk around Wailoa State Park to familiarize themselves with the area and observe points of interest.
During the second part of the workshop, attendees will learn about a simple, nearly "set and forget" method of hydroponics (Kratky method) that can be used (and reused) to grow fresh vegetables and food for their families. Families will receive a kit to take home with all necessary components, including seeds to grow vegetables.
