About the event
Join Papahana Kuaola on Saturday, April 25, for Hana Lima: ʻĀina-Based Service-Learning Day, a free one-day event in recognition of Earth Day. This experience emphasizes ʻāina stewardship, sustainable food systems, and environmental responsibility for keiki and ʻohana.
Unlike traditional service days, Hana Lima offers a structured learning approach through various hands-on service-learning stations that are facilitated by educators.
The service-learning stations include:
- Loʻi Kalo Stewardship Station Focus: Sustainable food systems & watershed health. Participants will learn about loʻi kalo as food-producing systems that support water flow, soil health, and ecosystem balance through various activities, including maintenance, clearing, or planting.
- Mālama Wai & Stream Care Station Focus: Water systems & erosion awareness. This station focuses on caring for streams and surrounding ʻāina, emphasizing the importance of healthy waterways to agriculture and food sustainability.
- ʻĀina & Food Systems Learning Station Focus: From ʻāina to food resilience. Participants will explore how ʻāina-based practices contribute to resilient local food systems, including soil care and land management.
Each station integrates physical stewardship with guided explanations and reflection, encouraging participants to think about how these practices can be applied in their communities.
This model transforms a traditional volunteer day into an immersive educational experience, providing participants not only with meaningful work but also with a deeper understanding and increased sense of kuleana to care for ʻāina.
