Hands-on workshop for youth to learn traditional akule fishing practices from elders in Hāna, Maui.
Time & Location
Oct 04, 2026, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM HST
Hāna coastal area, Hana, HI 96713, USA
About the event
Through our Kūpuna Program, Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke is collaborating with the Hāna Akule Hui to host a hands-on, intergenerational, 3-day workshop. This program aims to transmit traditional akule (bigeye scad) fishing practices from esteemed kupuna and cultural practitioners to youth (grades 8th to 12th) from the rural Hāna community.
This workshop emphasizes:
- Kilo iʻa (fish observation)
- Coordinated boat operations
- Safe net deployment and retrieval
- Net maintenance through weaving
By pairing experienced elders with youth, we foster cultural continuity, sustainable resource management (mālama kai), and community strengthening in rural East Maui.
The workshop will run over three consecutive mornings (8:00 AM - 12:00 PM) at a Hāna coastal site (e.g., Hāna Bay or approved community beach access). This schedule allows participants to balance work and family commitments. Activities will include land-based observation, on-water practice (with safety protocols in place), and net care sessions.
