ʻAha Niu Ola: A Community Gathering Celebrating Niu and Coastal Stewardship

ʻAha Niu Ola is a free, public, hands-on community event hosted by Mālama Hulēʻia at Alakoko loko iʻa in the ahupuaʻa of Niumalu, Kauaʻi. This event emphasizes the importance of niu (coconut) as a canoe plant and foundational coastal resource.

Participants will engage in:

• Workshops on niu cultivation and varietal knowledge
• Demonstrations of traditional food processing and craft
• Coconut cordage and weaving
• Invasive species detection and mitigation
• Cooperative and regenerative food system models

The event encourages active participation, allowing attendees to move between stations, plant niu, and engage in keiki-focused learning games. This gathering aims to strengthen stewardship capacity, deepen pilina to place, and support broader food resilience efforts on Kauaʻi.
