About the event

The Manokalanipo Kula Waena Makahiki is an annual cultural and athletic gathering that unites K–12 students from across Kauaʻi. This event, now in its 3rd year, showcases champions who excelled in Makahiki games held at their respective schools.

Launched two years ago, the championship reflects the rapid growth and embrace of this revitalized Hawaiian tradition, supported by a network of community partners. In 2025, it welcomed participation from 13 schools and over 300 students and faculty, with support from organizations such as Kamehameha Schools, Mālama Hulē‘ia, Kauaʻi Fire Department, Kauaʻi Lifeguards, KPAL, Boys & Girls Club, and local food vendors.

The 2026 championship will be hosted at Kauaʻi Community College, marking its second consecutive year at this venue. The college has been instrumental in providing the logistical support necessary for an event of this scale, ensuring accessibility for hundreds of students and community members.

During the Makahiki season, Kumano I Ke Ala facilitates traditional Hawaiian games that honor Lono, celebrating peace, harvest, gratitude, and community. Through these culturally grounded games, champions are determined based on skill, strength, teamwork, and sportsmanship, culminating in a festive island-wide competition that celebrates student excellence and cultural practice.

Free and open to the public, the championship transforms months of campus engagement into a vibrant celebration of youth achievement and cultural identity. It strengthens connections among schools, ʻohana, and community organizations, uplifting the next generation through Hawaiian values and tradition.
