About the event
The State Championship Canoe Race at Keʻehi Lagoon, hosted this year by the Oʻahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (OHCRA), is a public, statewide gathering that brings together paddlers, families, and communities from every island to celebrate Hawaiian canoe racing, cultural perpetuation, and state championship competition. Held annually with a rotating island host, the 2026 event will be produced by OHCRA and is expected to draw more than 15,000 attendees, with clubs and crews traveling inter-island to compete in koa canoes for the sprint-season state championship.
In addition to on-water competition, the event will feature:
- Made-in-Hawaiʻi vendors and local artisans
- Food, music, and hula
- Educational booths
- Live broadcast streaming that extends access to families and communities across the pae ʻāina
Cultural protocol and ʻike-based practices will frame the day, honoring the legacy of waʻa and reinforcing shared values of respect, sportsmanship, and stewardship.
Designed as a multigenerational community celebration, the State Championship strengthens inter-island relationships, showcases our State sport and Hawaiian traditions in action, and creates opportunities for keiki, ʻohana, and community members to gather, learn, and mālama the ocean spaces that sustain the sport.
