Program Information:
I Nui Ke Aho (INKA) is a non-profit organization based in Waialua on the North Shore of Oahu. INKA operates a traditional double-hulled Hawaiian sailing canoe built and maintained by our dedicated staff and volunteers, using mainly traditional techniques and materials. This canoe, Wanana Paoa, was built for the purpose of community building through indigenous education.
With Wanana Paoa, INKA seeks to strengthen our community by providing educational programs that teach collaboration, knowledge, and pono decision-making to our youth, ohana and community.
Along with sailing, we are also removing invasive species and planting native plants at Kahokuwelowelo. Kahokuwelowelo was a traditional space for learning about navigation and celestial phenomena and we are excited to share it with participants.
Led by experienced navigator, Captain Kamaki Worthington, INKA strives to develop a navigator’s mindset and foster a sense of community by breaking down cultural barriers, sharing our universal values and sense of place, and exposing our participants to career pathways in our community.
We are offering a summer program for anyone interested in learning more about a navigator's mindset, traditional sailing practices, and place-based learning.on Oahu's North Shore.
General workdays include kilo (making observations), sailing (weather permitting), learning about the star compass, how to tie ropes and knots, invasive species removal and native planting at Kahokuwelowelo.
Please bring sun protection, water, and closed toe shoes (Kahokuwelowelo). Typical days start at 8 am and end at noon. We meet at Maeaea Beach in Haleiwa for canoe workdays and at Chun's Reef Beach Park for Kahokuwelowelo workdays.
We plan to host days workdays on Saturdays in June (6/10, 6/17, and 6/24) and Sundays in July (7/2, 7/9, 7/16, and 7/23).
