About the event

‘Hana Noʻeau’ is a kaiāulu-centered placemaking initiative located in the heart of Downtown Hilo. This project integrates Native Hawaiian values, culture, and perspectives into public spaces through the creation of a public mural at the Pacific Building, situated at the corner of Keawe Street and Kalākaua Avenue. The mural, led by Native Hawaiian artist Kaiʻili Kaulukukui, will emerge from conversations, reflections, and shared imaginations, incorporating the voices, memories, and mana‘o of the community.

This initiative extends the 16th Annual ‘Abstract Only’ exhibition at Wailoa Art Center, bringing artistic expression into everyday life. The exhibition aims to liberate the expression of complex emotions and subconscious thoughts through the use of color, form, and texture.

As part of this project, HIAA, Kaulukukui, and cultural practitioners will host two creative workshops. These workshops invite keiki, ‘ohana, and community members to gather, talk story, and learn about abstract and mural art in relation to culture. Participants will share stories of place, explore new associations, and engage with art on a cerebral and emotional level.

Through participatory design activities, shared reflection, and creative exchange, attendees will deepen their connection to the place and strengthen relationships with themselves and one another. The completed mural will act as a lasting cultural marker, celebrated through mo’olelo, with a story that extends beyond the visual. It will reinforce Downtown Hilo as a space where arts, culture, and community identity are visible, valued, and nurtured.
